Here is how I got into Tech
After being told I couldn’t do electronics in High School “because you’re a girl” it just made me want to prove them wrong! I didn’t go to college after leaving school, academia just wasn’t for me, I got a job with a media centre that also allowed me to do a BTEC which was practical and on-the-job.
I got onto my degree course based on experience, but I didn’t learn much more than what the BTEC (or an apprenticeship) would teach. If you’re a hands-on techie, I’d suggest looking at other options than the traditional college/uni. With a team of fab people supporting me, I gained my qualification to go alongside the experience, to get some amazing jobs in TV, video and radio, working for the likes of the BBC, ITV and Rolls Royce, along with some fab charities.
Deciding what you want to do with your career can be one of the hardest decisions you can make, but always remember, you can change it up! I decided I’d had enough of the broadcasting life and wanting to start my own business, so I did! I now run my own digital training and SEO company, DigiEnable, and regularly speak at events across the UK on how to harness digital to help you.
I’ve had some amazing opportunities through other groups and boards I sit on, including some work across the globe including Portland, Athens, Brussels, Cape Town and more! I believe in supporting others. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for the support of other ladies (and a few fab gents too!) and now I feel I’m in a position to help others, so I do.
Wherever you are right now, if you try and be helpful always, that will reward you later in life. “People will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Maya Angelou
Here is one line to inspire you
When you want to do something but someone says “but you’re a girl?!”, do it anyway! Do be put off by what other people think!
