“It’s been a long way to the top” and after a while spent working in startups and tech, I’m glad I have learned so many things I can share with you girls, who are interested in working in tech.

5 top tips for girls interested in working in technology 600px

My name’s Alessia and I’m a digital marketing manager and tech startup consultant. My path has been extremely challenging, but I’m glad I’ve achieved what I was looking for, as I feel I wouldn’t have had the same experience doing it in any other way.

Spend time learning

So, my first tip for girls interested in Working in Tech is learn.

You don’t need a degree in computer technology to achieve a career in tech. There are a lot of online resources that help you to gain specific expertise, and a bunch of projects you can join to boost your knowledge of specific topics and tools.

You don’t need a degree in computer technology to achieve a career in tech.

You just need to step out from your comfort zone. And I know this is the kind of things that we, as women, are most scared about, as while we’re young we’re educated to please others and not to explore things we don’t know. That’s one of the reasons why, when we’re approaching new stuff once older, we’re often scared or less confident than men.

Forget the fact that you’re a girl and spend time doing things you like, even if your mum says you shouldn’t learn from your boy mates. It’s very useful learning from them!

Reach out and connect

My second tip is: connect. Women working in tech are not as known as men, but they’re there, you just need to do a bit of research to find them. Use LinkedIn or social media channels to connect with them and ask them about their experience and background.

It will help you to find your role model and become more confident about yourself and the rest of the world. Don’t be scared, if you’re honest people won’t say no.

Read about the industry

The third tip for girls interested in working in technology is: read as much as you can. Again, according to stereotypes we should be the ones following the latest fashion trends, but it doesn’t mean we can’t also follow the latest tech topics. It just depends on us and how we’re able to manage our time.

I’m not saying we should forget about our other interests, but we simply need to find a balance between being a girl and being a girl in tech. If you want to work in tech you need to be ready to follow all the news about emerging technologies and innovation, and every day there’s something new. You need to be aware of everything happening in this space.

Be confident in yourself

My fourth tip is: be yourself, and I think this is the trickiest thing. You need to be confident in yourself and ready to face challenges even when the rest of the world is telling you that you’re wrong. Follow your heart and make mistakes if necessary, but it will be the only way you will really understand what you’re looking for and how you can achieve your goals. There are no secrets or gurus who know yourself more than you do. Roll your sleeves up and start hustling.

Girls can embrace change

And my last tip is: be ready to change your ideas. When I graduated, I wouldn’t have thought about becoming the person I am. But soon after I realised that what I had in mind wasn’t what I was looking for. And again, there’s no one apart from yourself that’ll be able to change your mind.

You need to be confident in yourself and ready to face challenges even when the rest of the world is telling you that you’re wrong.

The more you understand about the inner part of yourself, what you like to do and where your energy comes from, the easier it will be to find your path. And then be ready to change it, and shape it as much as you want or need to do to achieve your goals. Even if those goals aren’t very clear, at the beginning.

Exploring careers in tech

You’ll be very happy when you put all the pieces together and one day in the future you’ll see your path and what you’ve achieved. That’s the kind of thing that makes me very happy now and which I’m excited about for the future. You can learn more about my experience on my blog. Good luck to the girls interested in working in tech and go and rock up your life!
